How to determine the period and group of an element, if the atomic number is known? How to check if the element forms covalent or electrovalent bonds with another element?

If the atomic number is known then we can directly look over on to the periodic table and find its period and group respectively.
If the element is present in s-block then it will form ionic compound and if it is present in p and d block then
generally covalent bond will be formed.
