How were the Bastar and the Java revolts similar? Explain with examples(5 MARKS)

The revolts in Bastar and Java were similar in the following ways.

1. In both places, the colonial government (British in Bastar and Dutch in Java)  wanted timber to build ships and railway sleepers.

2. To obtain timber, the governments imposed laws restricting the customary rights of forest people over forest resources.

3. Both governments banned shifting cultivation and introduced scientific cultivation.

4. In both places, the governments allowed the forest tribes to stay in the forests in return for free labour to obtain timber.

5. In both places, the forest people revolted against the colonial governments when they could no longer tolerate the restrictions.
