hybridization of ethylene molecule ?

Dear Student,
In ethylene molecule (CH2=CH2) both the Carbon atoms are sp2 hybridised.
To find out hybridisation in carbon compounds: No. of hybrid orbitals = no. of sigma bonds formed.
Ethylene is built from hydrogen atoms (1s1) and carbon atoms (1s22s22px12py1). There is only a small energy gap between the 2s and 2p orbitals, and an electron is promoted from the 2s to the empty 2p to give 4 unpaired electrons (1s22s12px12py12pz1 ). Each carbon makes three sigma bonds: 2 with H and one with another C, so it requires 3 hybrid orbitals which are the sp2 orbitals formed. So it is sp2 hybridised. Also one electron of each carbon atom in unhybridised p orbital of each carbon atom makes pi bond.
