I had attempted a test on Punctuation, English Grammar . The question was : 'Which of the following sentences in incorrect? 1. He asked me why I was late for the class . 2. He asked me why I was late for the class ? ' I pressed option 2 but it was showing that the correct answer would be option 1. But as per I have learnt from school , a sentence can end with a question mark if it starts with a 'w' interrogative word like when or was or where . So , can you please explain what should be the correct answer and why ?

The first sentence is correct: in indirect speech, you will not get a question mark at the end.
The second sentence is incorrect.

Were there  inverted commas around "Why I was late for class?" Check again, it maybe an indirect speech sentence.
