If ethylene is stimulating the growth of dimater then is it like that it is stimulating the growth of intercalary meristems so as to divide more and increase the diamter?

Ethylene promotes fruit growth, ripening of fruits etc, it inhibits the longitudinal growth and thus stimulates transverse growth so that stem looks swollen.
