If the poem has been written as a  satire , with shades of irony and sarcasm   , can the king's "just and placid" nature have satirical or a sarcastic undertone ? (Poem: The Tale of Melon City)

Dear Student

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

The poem by Vikram Seth – ‘The Tale of Melon City’ is a satirical poem with shades of irony and sarcasm. The ‘just and placid’ King is a parody of a monarch trying to establish the principles of a democracy in a monarchical kingdom. The King in his thirst for providing his people what they wanted ended up being hanged himself for an obtuse cause. The poet does give shades of satire and sarcasm to the character of the King.
