The war was not resolved by the game. Both the armies played the match to pass the time as they were standing guard on the border. It was natural that they started talking and then playing the game. But later the war continued and it ended only when the governments had wanted to end the war. Jim must have been killed or held a prisoner by the enemy army that is the reason he did not return.
