If we had many layers of  cotton wool is a open (no lid) jar, and we place a worm in it will it survive at least for 3-4 days or more?

No you can't keep them in open jar. They need dark environment and so cover with a dark lid,few types of dirt,sand. And then it can survive for 2~3weeks.
