If we loose our mother language we will be slaved?

Dear student,
These words were said by M. Hamel to the villagers in the chapter ' The Last Lesson'. M. Hamel informed the villagers that from, henceforth, only German could be taught in schools of Alsace and Lorraine. He regretted that the French folks could no longer learn their mother tongue. His love for his mother tongue made him emotional. He praised French as the most beautiful and logical language in the world. According to him, for prisoners like them, mother language was key to their freedom.
