In tobacco plant, the male gametes have 24 chromosomes.
a) What will be the number of chromosomes in the zygote formed?
b) What will be the number of chromosomes in the new plant formed? Justify with scientific reason.

Dear student,
Please find below the answer:

a. The zygote is formed by the fusion of a male and a female gamete. Therefore, the number of chromosomes in a zygote is twice as many as that of a gamete, i.e., 48.

b. The new plant will have 48 chromosomes. This is because the zygote divides mitotically and produces cells with 48 chromosomes. Only gametes will have 24 chromosomes.

Hope this clears your doubt.
Regards.
