In which direction would a compass needle align if taken to geographical

(1) north
(2) south pole?

A compass needle tries to align with the lines of magnetic field, and if those lines are tilted down into the ground, then the needle will try to tilt too.  Our earth is assumed to have a huge bar magnet with its south pole near the geographic north pole and the north pole near the geographic south pole. So, a compass needle will tilt downwards at the poles. The N of the needle will tilt towards the ground at the geographic north pole. The S of the needle will point towards the ground at the geographic south pole
