‘Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)’ and ‘Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT)’ are two assisted reproductive technologies. How is one different from the other?

Solution

Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)’ and ‘Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT)’ are two assisted reproductive technologies.

The difference between them are as follows -
  • In Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection sperm is directly injected into the ovum in the laboratory. While In gamete intrafallopian transfer ovum is collected from a donor and transferred into the fallopian tube of surrogate mother.
  • In case of ICSI fertilisation takes place in vitro whereas in GIFT fertilisation takes place in vivo- at the fallopian tube.
  • ICSI is recommended for people not being able to provide suitable environment for fertilisation and low sperm motility; whereas GIFT is recommended for women who cannot produce ovum.
