Is large number of small sized organism or small number of large sized organism is desirable for fitness????

Dear Student

Answer to the above question is as follows:

According to Darwanian fitness, necessary factors which affects the fitness of the given population are -
  • Overproduction of offspring.
  • Variation
  • Selection
  • Reproduction of adaptation
Depending on these factors, under a particular set of selection pressure organisms evolve towards the most suitable reproductive strategy. For example some organisms breed only once in their lifetime (bamboo) while other breed many times in their lifetime (most birds and mammals). Some produce large number of small sized offsprings while other produce small number of large sized offsprings. Therefore the traits of organisms evolved in response to the constraints imposed by the abiotic and biotic component of the habitat in which they live. This also implies that an organism maximize their reproductive fitness in desirable ways.
