is the meaning of gamosepalous and polysepalous the same as gamopetalous and polypetalous
what do they signify , is it the relationship between a calyx and a corolla or between 2 calyx or 2 corolla?
Dear student,
The unit of calyx is sepals and the unit of corolla is petals. Therefore gamosepalous applies to calyx when all the sepals in the calyx are united and polysepalous applies to calyx when al the sepals are free.
Similarly, when all the petals in corolla are united is called gamopetalous and when all the petals in corolla are free is called polypetalous.
Gamosepalous and polysepalous is the arrangement of sepals at the base of flower which helps in holding the flower and prevents the flower from drying out. Polepetalous and gamopetalous is the kind of arrangement of petals in the floral whorl to facilitate the process of pollination and to draw the attention of pollinators. There is no relationship between calyx and corolla.
