A state is said to be a “princely state” if it enjoys its own administrative structure irrespective of the country it geographically belongs to. But a state ceased to be a “princely state” if its prince agrees to merger with country it geographically belongs to or is defeated.

A step-by-step process was followed for the merger of various princely states the Indian territories. Most of the states were annexed / merged in the Indian administration by 1956.
A few “princely state” like that of Kashmir, Hyderabad, Junagadh and Tripura and Manipur were still autonomous bodies. The leader of Muslim League, Mohd. Ali Jinnah strongly supported the right of the princely states to remain independent, joining neither India nor Pakistan.
As of now, the state of these “princely states” can be given as:

- Kashmir – still an autonomous body with half of Kashmir in indian territoties and other half in Pakistan.
- Hyderabad - Although Hyderabad has been merged with India it, enjoys special status among the union territories of India. Only Delhi is another state that too enjoys special status among the 7 union territories of India.
- Junagadh – Unanimously merged with India though after some struggle.
- Tripura and Manipur – Annexed to the Indian government in 1975.
