Justify title of chapter the last lesson

The chapter 'The last lesson" is set in a situation where French could no longer be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. Therefore, this lesson was going to be Mr Hamel's last French class. The title is further justified as the Last French class was not only about learning French, but also about the importance of French. By keeping the language close to their hearts, they could prevent themselves from being enslaved. As long as people know their language, it is as though they have the key to their own identity.
