Solution-
a) The metal rim is always made slightly smaller than the wooden wheel. As it is known, metals expand on heating and contracts on cooling.The metal rim is heated. On heating, the rim expands and fit onto the wheel. Cold water is then poured over the rim. Due to cooling the metal rim contracts and fits tightly onto the wheel.
b) As the thermometer bulb is heated, heat is transferred to mercury, which expands on heating. As a consequence of expansion, mercury rise in the capillary tube of thermometer. The height of rise of mercury or the length of capillary tube therefore depends on the extent of heating of thermometer. For higher temperatures to be measured, capillary tubes of larger lengths will be required.
