The Extraordinary story of Helen Keller
- Ishabel Ross
Ishabel Ross, primarily a journalist, writes about the women’s accomplishments
in science, sports and literature. The essay, ‘The Extraordinary Story Of Helen Keller’ is an
inspiring tale of a woman who, in spite of her multiple handicaps, fought bravely till the
end of her life.
This essay not only provides a biographical sketch of Helen Keller but also
describe the qualities that made her stand out from the rest of the women of her time.
Helen Keller never seemed to consider being blind, deaf and mute as three handicaps that
could differentiate her from others. The present essay reveals Helen Keller’s determination
to overcome all obstacles and progress bravely in life. Helen Keller was a very difficult
child as she could neither comprehends what others said nor she respond.
Helen Keller was born on 27th June, 1880 in the little town of Tuscumbia. She
was a normal baby up to 19 months. Then she had an attack of ‘fever of brain and
stomach’. She was seriously ill for some time but the fever subsided suddenly. By the age of
three, she became blind, deaf and mute. Yet she grew fast and was physically strong and
well formed. Her inability to communicate and to hear from the rest of the world frustrated
her. Her helplessness led her to frantic tantrums. She had wild gusts of rage. She would
fling herself on the grass screaming in an uncontrollable manner. Her table manners were
shocking and she was always dirty without washing her face or buttoning her shoes.
Her desperate mother took Helen to the Perkins Institution where the doctors
recommended Miss Anne Sullivan as a tutor for her. She was immediately attracted by the
Helen’s fine bearing and intelligent face. Anne Sullivan is a woman of great patience and
determination. She gradually tamed Helen Keller and revealed her the magic and mystery
of language. The bonding between the two grew stronger and they were awarded the
“Cooperative Achievement of Unique Character and Far-reaching Significance” for their
remarkable achievement. Helen Keller remains till today a symbol of strength,
determination and will power to fight against all odds.

Helen Keller

Early Life

Helen Keller was the first of two daughters born to Arthur H. Keller and Katherine Adams Keller. She also had two older stepbrothers. Keller's father had proudly served as an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The family was not particularly wealthy and earned income from their cotton plantation. Later, Arthur became the editor of a weekly local newspaper, the North Alabamian.

Keller was born with her senses of sight and hearing, and started speaking when she was just 6 months old. She started walking at the age of 1.

Loss of Sight and Hearing

In 1882, however, Keller contracted an illness—called "brain fever" by the family doctor—that produced a high body temperature. The true nature of the illness remains a mystery today, though some experts believe it might have been scarlet fever or meningitis. Within a few days after the fever broke, Keller's mother noticed that her daughter didn't show any reaction when the dinner bell was rung, or when a hand was waved in front of her face. Keller had lost both her sight and hearing. She was just 18 months old.

As Keller grew into childhood, she developed a limited method of communication with her companion, Martha Washington, the young daughter of the family cook. The two had created a type of sign language, and by the time Keller was 7, they had invented more than 60 signs to communicate with each other. But Keller had become very wild and unruly during this time. She would kick and scream when angry, and giggle uncontrollably when happy. She tormented Martha and inflicted raging tantrums on her parents. Many family relatives felt she should be institutionalized.

Educator Anne Sullivan

Looking for answers and inspiration, in 1886, Keller's mother came across a travelogue by Charles Dickens, American Notes. She read of the successful education of another deaf and blind child, Laura Bridgman, and soon dispatched Keller and her father to Baltimore, Maryland to see specialist Dr. J. Julian Chisolm. After examining Keller, Chisolm recommended that she see Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, who was working with deaf children at the time. Bell met with Keller and her parents, and suggested that they travel to the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston, Massachusetts. There, the family met with the school's director, Michael Anaganos. He suggested Helen work with one of the institute's most recent graduates, Anne Sullivan. And so began a 49-year relationship between teacher and pupil.

In March 1887, Sullivan went to Keller's home in Alabama and immediately went to work.

When Helen was very young, not even two years old, she became very, very sick. She was so sick that she almost died. She didn't die but she lost her hearing and her sight. Yes, she became deaf and blind.

Can you imagine what it would be like to be both deaf and blind. If you close your eyes tight, and put your hands over your ears so you cannot hear, you will have an idea what it would be like. When Helen got over being sick and was feeling well again, which took a long time, she found she couldn't do very many things for she was bumping into things and tripping on things. Her mother and father couldn't tell her where to walk or play because she couldn't hear them, and they couldn't show her because of course, she couldn't see them. Helen wanted to do things but it wasn't possible so she would get very angry and upset and would fight and hit at people. She couldn't talk because she had not learned before she was sick, so she could not tell her parents what she wanted, or what she was thinking. Her parents tried to teach her things but it was very difficult.

When Helen was about 7 years old her Mom and Dad hired a teacher to come and liver with them. The teacher had a very difficult job and tried many different ways to get Helen to understand.

If you had a friend who could not see or hear, how would you get them to do things, and learn about things? You would have to get them to use their hands to see and hear with.

That is what Helen's teacher did. She would lead her to something like a tree or a horse and she would get her to touch it so that she would get an idea of what its shape and size was. Then she would spell the word that represented the object in the palm of Helen's hand. Well, she did this for months and months, and Helen did not seem to understand what was happening, although she loved going out for walks with her teacher and touching the leaves and flowers and buildings and animals. And she was feeling much more contented and happy. Then one day Helen's teacher was trying to teacher her how to spell water but she wasn't having much luck with it. So she took Helen out into the yard where there was a water pump and she pumped water onto Helen's hands and arms and face and head, and she kept spelling the letters W-A-T-E-R- in the palm of Helen's hand. All of a sudden, just like a miracle, Helen realized that the letters being made on her hand meant the stuff that was being washed over her arms and face. Then she understood that all the other things her teacher had been spelling on her hand represented the things that the teacher had gotten her to touch. From that time on Helen learned very fast. She had discovered what words were even though she could not see them or hear them.

When Helen got older she learned to read books that have special letters that are called braille. These are made up of little bumps that can be felt with the fingers.

She later went to college and learned how to write. She wrote many books and she traveled all over the world teaching and helping other people who were blind or who were deaf. One of Helen's favorite books was the Bible, and by reading with fingers she came to know all about Jesus and she learned to love the Lord and to live by His Word. She was given several books that were written by Emanuel Swedenborg, that a friend had transcribed into Braille. She read these books with great interest and became a firm believer in the teachings of the New Church. She said that these teachings helped her a great deal in understanding the Bible and also about the nature of her spirit.

Helen's life was not wasted because she could not see and hear. Her life was very rich and very happy and productive. Her life is an inspiration to all of us to do the best we can with the blessings that God has given to us.

Helen Keller was an American writer and speaker. She was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1880 to Arthur H. Keller and Kate Adams Keller. When she was nineteen months old she became sick and lost her eyesight and hearing. The doctor didn't know what it was, so he called it a "congestion of the stomach and brain." Some people say that it was scarlet feveror meningitis. She was an obedient and good girl. Communicating with other people was hard for Helen, because she could not see or hear. She made up some home signs that she used to communicate with her family. The home signs were quite simple, pull meant "come", push meant "go" and so on. Sometimes Helen's family did not understand what Helen was meaning with her home signs. That made Helen frustrated and she had temper tantrums.

Anne helped Helen to learn how to communicate with other people. She taught her the names of things by writing the words on Helen’s hand.Helen tried to help poor people and other blind people during her life. She traveled to over 39 countries with Anne to talk about her life and experiences.
