In 'The Portrait of a Lady', the author explores the theme of death and parting from our loved ones due to death. Khushwant Singh's grandmother is an integral part of his life and contributes a lot to his growth. Life is invincible in that it goes on despite all obstacles and circumstances. the author moves to the city for higher education and even though his grandmother does not approve of the newfangled ideas, life still goes on. The grandmothers' death, despite her being a kind, compassionate soul is prof of the fact that nobody can escape the eventuality and reality of death.
