Little Franz is the narrator of the story. The name ‘Franz’ means ‘from France’. In what way

understanding of the story? Provide at least one evidence from the text to support your
opinion.

Dear student,

The story 'The Last Lesson' is about the loss of freedom by France due to the German invasion. Franz had not paid attention to M Hamel's lesson and felt regret that he had not made an attempt to learn his own language properly. The very fact the narrator is called Franz which means 'from France' re-emphasises the theme of pride in one's heritage and identity that one's language imparts. The reader is able to identify with Franz: a schoolboy who would rather play truant than attend long, boring lessons. Many of us have felt regret once precious time is lost: time we could have spent in learning and appreciating that which gives us identity.

Regards
