The major physiographic divisions of India are
1. The Himalayan Mountains: This consists of the Himalayas which are further subdivided into the Himadri, Himachal and Shivaliks.
2. The Northern Plains, which are divided into the Indus river system in the west and the Ganga-Brahmaputra river system in the east.
3. The Peninsular Plateau: The peninsular plateau is divided by the Narmada river. The part of the plateau lying north of the Narmada river is called the central highlands while the part lying south of the Narmada river is called the Deccan plateau.
4. The coastal plains: The coastal plains lie on the east and west coast of India. The western coastal plain is bounded by the Arabian sea and the western ghats. The eastern coastal plain is bounded by the Bay of Bengal and the eastern ghats.
5. The Indian desert, also called the Thar desert, lies in the western part of the state of Rajasthan.
6. The Islands-Along with mainland, India has two set of islands Andaman and Nicobar island and Lakshadweep island .Andaman and Nicobar islands lies in the Bay of Bengal. Lakshadweep Islands lies in Arabian sea.
