a. Women had a very significant position in our ancient Indian society, they participated in religious ceremonies and assemblies. However, as time passed the status of women in Indian society underwent a change.
b. The idea of patriarchy became well entrenched in Indian society which propagates women's subordination to men as natural.

d. Women's were confined to the household chores and a lot of social taboos were attached to them.
e. 19th century reform movements sought to empower women. Laws banning sati, legalizing widow remarriage aimed at improving their position.
f. A lot of work was done in promoting education for women. The role of Raja Rammohan Roy, Iswarchand Vidyasagar can be seen in this context.
g. Spread of English education, made people more rationale , liberal and progressive in their outlook and thus they demanded change.
h. Further, many educated women over a period time have played an important role in bringing about upliftment and change.
i. We may give example of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain whose most influential work was Sultana's Dream in 1905. In 1910 she started a school for girls in Kolkata and Patna. She has been a symbol of change and criticised conservative practises.Pandita Ramabai, who criticised the rigid caste system and the plight of upper caste women in Hindus. She started a widow home in Pune, offering shelter to them and also provided them with training to become economically and financially independent.
j. Also suffrage movements around the World also inspired women's movements in the country.
