mode of nutrition in starfish

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

Starfish has heterotrophic mode of nutrition. It has a very unique way of obtaining its nutrition. The mouth lies on the underside of the body and they feed on mussels, clams, small fish, etc. Star fishes have a number of tube feet (generally 5). They wrap them around their prey and slightly open the shells of the mussels or clams. Then through its mouth it pushes its stomach into the bivalve's shell. There it digests the animal inside the shell and pulls back its stomach into its own body. This unique feeding system allows the starfish to feed on organisms bigger than the ones which can fit into its tiny mouth.
