Mow much water vapour is contained in a cubic room of 4 m along an edge if the relative humidity is 50% and the temperature is 27°C? I he vapour pressure of water at 27°C is 26.7 torr. (The relative humidity expresses the partial pressure of water as a per cent of water vapour pressure).

Dear Student,

The problem can be solved in the following manner:
Length of edge = 4 mVolume of cubic room = (length)3=(4)3=64 m3= 64  × 103 LVapour pressure of water = 267.7 torrWhen relative humidity is 50%,Pressure of water vapour = 0.5 × 267.7=13.4 torr=13.4 × 1760 atm=0.0176 atmTemperature = 27 °C=300 KR = Gas constant = 0.0821 L atm mol-1K-1Now,using Ideal gas law, n = PVRT=0.0176 × 64  1030.0821 × 300 = 45.8 molNow, Number of moles = WeightMolar massWeight = number of moles ×molar mass = 45.8× 18 = 824.4 g = 0.82 kg

Thus, 0.82 kg of water vapour is present.

Hope it helps.
