Name the plant Mendel used for his experiment. What type of progeny was obtained by Mendel in F 1  and F 2  generations when he crossed the tall and short plants? Write the ratio he obtained in F 2  generation plants. (Delhi 2019)

Solution:

Mendel used garden pea or Pisum sativum for his experiment

  • F1 – First filial generation or first generation character.
  • F2 – Second filial generation or second generation character.

When a true breeding tall plant is crossed with a true breeding dwarf plant, all the plants produced in F1 generation are tall. Though phenotypically all of them appear to be tall another character (short) is also there in the cross in recessive condition. The presence of this recessive trait can be observed in their genotypes.

All the plants of F1 generation are phenotypically tall but in genotype both the traits (T and t) are present.

However in the F2 generation both phenotypes (tall and dwarf) plants are obtained. The genotypes obtained in F2 generation are: TT, Tt and tt.

Phenotypic ratio obtained in F2 generation = 3 : 1
Genotypic ratio obtained in F2 generation = 1 : 2 : 1
