(a) Concave mirror can converge the light at a point. That is why they are used in solar furnaces. Concave mirror converge the light incident on them at a point called principal focus. Hence, they are used to produce large amount of heat at that point.



(b) Convex mirror gives virtual, erect and diminished image of object placed in front of it. Because of which they have wide field of view. Thus, it enables the driver to see traffic behind him.


The concave mirror could also form the virtual and magnified image of the object. The diagram is

In solar furnaces we converge the sunlight coming from the infinity at the focus of concave mirror.

The solar furnace is a state-of-the-art structure in the shape of a concave mirror that can be used to generate a very high temperature by focusing a beam of sunlight. The temperature at the point where these beam of rays meet may rise up to 3000°C!

 

Same thing is happen in the case of head mirror used by E.N.T.

 

 

Convex mirror is used as rear view mirror as it gives a clear diminished and an erect image of the traffic that is behind you. Also, has a large field of view i.e. it covers a wide range of the traffic behind you and gives a very clear image.Just imagine the fact that you are using a concave mirror. Everything behind you will be enlarged and tilted from the original position and you can’t see the actual traffic behind you. Even a plain mirror is not used as it does not cover a wide surface for the traffic.Hence, a convex mirror is used.

A)Solar furnace:A concave mirror is used.It has the property to concentrate the sunlight coming from sun alongwith heat radiation at its focus.As a result, temperature at its focus increases and the substance placed at the focal point gets heated to a high temperature.
B)Rear-view mirror of a vehicle:A convex mirror is used.It is used because it always produces a virtual,and erect image,whose size is smaller than than the object.therefore enabling the driver to see wide field view of the traffic behind the vehicle in a small mirror.
A concave mirror could form a magnified and virtual image of an object when object is placed between pole and focus of a mirror.The image will be formed behind the mirror.
