On what criterion did James Mill divide Indian history into Hindu , Muslim & British ? What is the problem with his periodisation ?

James Mill divided Indian history into Hindu, Muslim and British periods on the basis of who were the most powerful rulers in India. The problem with this periodisation is that it reduced history to a very communal viewpoint.
