one year ago a man was 8  times as old as his son now his age is equal to the square of his son's age. find their present age

let father's age be x
let son's age be y
x-1 = 8(y-1)
​x-1= 8y - 8
x = 8y -7..............(eq. 1)
x = y^2
​by substituting eq.1 in this equation,we get
8y - 7 = y²
y² - 8y + 7 = 0
y^{2 -} 7y - y + 7 = 0
y(y-7) - 1(y-7) = 0
(y-1)(y-7) = 0
y-1 = 0              or               y-7=0
therefore y =7, the age of child cannot be one
son's age = 7 yrs
fathers age = 7²
=49 yrs
