Oxygen is needed for heating then how is calcination of ores possible without oxygen?

Dear student,

Calcination is generally done for carbonates and they already have oxygen , thus it is done in the absence of oxygen. Carbonate ores are calcined to convert metal carbonates to their respective oxides and carbon dioxide is released. .

E.g.

ZnCO3(s)----------> ZnO(s) + CO2(g)

calcination,?ores?are heated strongly in the absence of air(Oxygen). This is done so as to convert Metal Carbonates into Metal Oxides and Carbon Di Oxide. If these?ores?are heated in presence of air?no?reaction will take place and all our will go in vain. These Oxides are further reduced to oxides by smelting.
