Peggy was the most popular girl of the school. Unlike Wanda, she was pretty, had beautiful clothes and curly hair. Maddie was her best friend. Though Maddie did join in the teasing of Wanda, and made fun of her dresses, she was not too happy with the way Wanda was treated by Peggy. Maddie herself came from a poor background and was afraid that one day Peggy would find out and tease her too.
Maddie tried to tell Peggy to stop teasing Wanda by writing a note to her. She knew she would never have the courage to speak to Peggy about this matter. As she was writing the note, she pictured herself in the school yard as a new target for Peggy and the girls. She thought Peggy might ask her where she got the dress she had on and she would have to say that it was one of Peggy’s old ones. This was what she was afraid of. Consequently, she ended up tearing the note. Maddie was indeed an emotional girl: Maggie was sad when Wanda left. It was she who insisted that they write a letter of apology to Wanda. She was overjoyed that Wanda sent them customised pictures.
