please answer me 8

Dear Student,

Answer to 8th question:

a) Solution 1 is Hypotonic solution: A solution having lesser concentration of solute. It thus, losses water or solvent by osmosis across the semi permeable membrane. Cell placed in (here potato) gains water from solution.

Solution 2 is Hypertonic solution: A solution having higher concentration of solute. It thus, gains water or solvent by osmosis across a semi permeable membrane. Potato will loose water and get shrinks.

Solution 3 is Isotonic solution: A solution having a concentration such that it neither gains nor loses water by osmosis.

b) Size of potato remains same in solution 3 which is isotonic in nature as it has equal concentration of solute as well as solvent, so Potato will neither gain or loose water thus neither it gets shrink nor swell.

c) The concentration of cell sap is higher in the root hair as compared to soil. So water enters the root due to endo -osmosis. This facilitates the absorption of water by root hairs.

d) Osmosis is a process of flow of solvent molecules from lower concentration to higher concentration through a semipermeable membrane.

e) The cell wall is freely permeable and the cell membrane is selectively permeable.
