In the beginning, the seagull was timid. He had no confidence in his ability to fly. Therefore, he was afraid to even attempt flying. Despite a desperate attempt by his family members, he could not overcome his fears. However, in the end, hunger and starvation force him to fly. After his first flight, he overcame his fear of flying. He then starts flying higher and higher. This new-found confidence is used by him to even swim in the water. The timid seagull was transformed into a confident flyer and swimmer by the end of the chapter.
