Let the number to be subtracted be x
Now, 11-x, 23-x and 53-x are in continued proportion
 Then,     11-x : 23-x :: 23 - x53-x⇒11-x23-x = 23-x53-x⇒11-x53-x = 23-x2⇒583 - 11x - 53x + x2 = 529 + x2 - 46x⇒583 - 529 = 64x - 46x⇒54 = 18x⇒x = 5418 = 3So, required number is 3
