Please answer these 2 questions:

1. Why do meristematic tissues lack vacuoles?

2. What is the role of transpiration for plants?

1. Meristematic cells present in plants divides continuously. To make the cell division easy the cells of meristematic tissues are small, very thin walled, and without any vacuoles. Vacuoles basically serve the purpose of storing of nutrients and excess salts etc. Meristematic cells do not need to store these nutrients. This is the reason why in meristematic cells vacuoles are non existent.

2. Role of transpiration in plants is as follows:

  • Creates transpirational pull for transport
  • Supplies water for photosynthesis
  • Transports minerals from soil to all parts of a plant
  • Cools the surface of the leaves (due to the evaporation of water)
  • Keeps the cells turgid; hence, maintains their shape
