BEST OF LUCK FOR EXAMS

In this chapter Gurudayal Singh writes about his fond childhood memories and how his life was when he was a child. He writes about how he and his friends would play by jumping from logs and would subsequently rip their clothes. instead of being comforted by their mothers and sisters, they would be scolded and the author recollects that his father was very strict and would beat him to no end. Still they would go play in the same place the next day.
Moving on , the author writes about how he and his friends would spend their summer vacations. He recalls that they would jump into the pool and try to swim even if they didnt know how to. He reminisces about his fond memories playing endlessly and gorging on food at his grandmother's house. He also writes about how holiday homework would torment him.
Writing about his school life, the author says that he and his friends never liked going to school because of many reasons, one of them being their sports teacher, Pritam Chand. He describes Pritam as a brash, harsh and strict teacher who would beat them to no end. The author, speaking about the mentalities of parents on education, writes that many parents did not send their students to school and he was the first boy in his family to attend school.
He further writes that the headmaster was the opposite of Pritam and was always calm and collected.
If there was one thing he liked about school, it was scouting. He used to love actng like he was in the army, and was a fan of their routines. Moreover, when their usually strict PT master would appreciate them, they would feel extra special.
Moving on the author writes about the second world war and how the Britishers would trick the villagers into joining the army.
He further writes about his sports teacher and describes his appearance.
He writes that when he was in fourth standard, the sports teacher also taught them the farsi language, which he found very difficult. After many of his classmates, him included, couldnt complete a tough assignment, the sports teacher punished them harshly, which angered the headmaster, and Pritam was soon suspended. The author and his friends later lernt that he had rented a flat above a shop and was taking care of two parrots. He and his friends wondered how the usually strict and ready-to-hit sports teacher could be so delicate.
He concludes by saying that he now understands a lot of things he didnt understand then.
