please explain this question as i have not understood f the 1st and 2 nd step of the sphere 1 and 2 resulting in 6 electrons and similarly sphere1 and sphere3resultig in 5 electrons this question is in the topic interaction between chargesQ1)

Use the following information to answer the next question.

The given figure shows three charged metal spheres made up of the same material. Sphere I is first touched with sphere II and then touched with sphere III.

What will be the amount of charge remaining on sphere I?

  • Two positive charges

  • Two negative charges

  • One positive charge

  • One negative charge

Ans :

When sphere I is brought in contact with sphere II, a total of electrons will get transferred to sphere II in order to distribute the charges evenly on both the spheres. This process of charging is called charging by conduction. Therefore, after the transfer of electrons, sphere I will have (9 6) = 3 negative charges.

When a contact is made between spheres I and III, a total of electrons will get transferred from sphere I to sphere III in order to make the electron distribution equal on both the spheres. Therefore, after the transfer of electrons, sphere I will be left with (5 3) = 2 positive charges.

The correct answer is A.

We have to remember that when conduction takes places it tends to equalize the charges in both bodies by transferring it from one side to other.

Now, say if body A had 2 charge and body B had 4 charge and then if they were brought in contact flow of charges would take place form body B to body A (as B has more charge than A) in such a manner that after removing contact both bodies will acquire same amount of charge. In other words we will get a charge equilibrium. So, body B will send a charge of 1 to body A and thus charge on both bodies will now

on A

= 2 + 1 = 3

on B

4 - 1 = 3

thus we have reached an equilibrium

We can apply the same to all other situations. Hope things are clearer now.
