Graphite structure is formed by the hexagonal arrays being placed in layers one above the other. Layers are held by van der Waals forces. Each carbon atom in hexagonal ring undergoes sp2 hybridisation and makes three sigma bonds with three neighbouring carbon atoms. Fourth electron forms a π bond. The electrons are delocalised over the whole sheet. 
The structure of graphite is shown below. Due to the structure, it is more prone to chemical attack.
