                                                              Slums situation in Big Cities
                                                                                                                            Vishal Singh Shekhawat
Slums are informal settlements of people from rural areas in urban areas, who have come in search of work and better economic opportunities. However, since the urban area population in itself is growing enormously, the living condition of the slum dwellers is unhealthy, poor and unfit to be classified a normal condition.
Unemployment, poverty, illiteracy, forceful migration are some of the conditions that have led to mushroom growth of slums in big cities. Many individuals seek shelter in a very small area. They have no proper facility, lack proper drainage and cleaning system as well. Small children also live in those areas. They live in an unsafe environment, and with an air of insecurity and fear as these places can anytime be uprooted for other purposes of the cities, thus leaving them homeless.
This matter of grave concern must be addressed by government and also individuals or organisations (NGOs, societies, trusts etc.) that can work on this matter. Lack of jobs in their own areas force these people to move to some other location and hence the problems. They have the right to work and the right to feed themselves and their families. The employers should also have some responsibilities towards these workers. The town planning agencies should chalk out plan to provide shelter and clean conditions to these people, the maintenance of which should be responsibility of the people living and using the facilities. The government also has a major role to play and check this population, a fixed part should be allocated for the benefit of the slums and the slum dwellers.
