He was born on 2nd October which is known as Gandhi Jayanti and celebrated as a national holiday in India. A huge preacher and practitioner of non-violence he was one of the eminent leaders of Indian nationalism in British ruled India. He was born and brought up in Gujarat and later trained in law in London. There he fought for civil rights of Muslim and Hindu Indians in South Africa, using the new techniques of non-violent civil disobedience that he developed. He was the leader of Indian National Congress. He led the Dandi March protesting against the national salt tax in 1930. He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu fanatic, a few months after India got freedom from the clutches of the British. Regards
