1.) It is used to purify gold as it dissolves various impurites in it. The property behind this use is that nitric acid can dissolve impurities like Cu,Ag,Zn,etc.
2.) It is used to prepare the mixture aqua regia. The property behind this use is that nitric acid dissolves noble metals.
3.) It is used to etch designs on copper and brassware. The property behind this use is that nitric acid acts as a solvent to large number of metals.
