Q.31. The science of adapting designs from nature to solve modern problems is known as biomimetics. Velcro is perhaps the best example of biomimetics. In 1948, a Swiss scientist, George de Mestral, removed a coarse seed stuck to his dog's fur and studied it under a microscope. Impressed by the Stickiness of the seed's hooks, he copied the design, to make a two-piece fastener. One piece has stiff hooks like that of the prickly seed coat, while the other has soft loops that allow the hooks to stick. For example, shown below are the velcro straps of a shoe.

In which of the following cases in nature, could this design be helping?
A. transfer of pollen by insects
B. fish getting trapped in fishing nets
C. birds using their claws to hold twigs
D. weak stem of a climber curling around a support

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

The design of the Velcro strap is useful in the transfer of pollen. The pollens can stick at the strap and when an insect sits on it, the pollen would be carried by the insect.
Hence, the correct option is (a).
