How has India’s occupational structure changed during the period from 1950 to 1990

Dear student,

Occupational structure refers to the distribution of working people among the sectors of economy viz. primary, secondary and tertiary
During 1950's Indian was an agricultural economy. Around 70-80% of working population was engaged in agriculture and lived in villages. Apart from agriculture there were certain artisans. India had good handicraft industry but due to machine made goods of British the handicraft industry loosed its importance. The tertiary sector was not much developed. During 1990,  with introduction of LPG policies efforts were made to increase the growth of modernisation and industrialisation   in India.  Efforts were done to shift working force from primary to secondary and tertiary sectors Modern technology were introduced and with help of machines in production the surplus workforce has shifted to other sectors.Tertiary sector has shown tremendous growth.  Even after growth of service sector, planners could not achieve development in rural areas, land reforms failed. High growth of labour force also hindered development . So the development of labour intensive sector could only brought changes in occupational structure from agricultural to non agricultural sector.
