Water potential is defined as the potential energy of water in a system.

Solute potential (osmotic potential) pressure applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of water across a semipermeable membrane.

Water potential is represented by the equation Ψsystem = Ψtotal = Ψs + Ψp + Ψg + Ψm.
 

where

  • Ψs = solute potential
  • Ψp, = pressure potential
  • Ψg, = gravity potential
  • Ψm = matric potential

Solute potential (Ψs) increases with decreasing solute concentration; an increase in Ψs causes a increase in the total water potential.
So option 1 would be correct.
