Solute potential (osmotic potential) pressure applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of water across a semipermeable membrane.

Water potential is represented by the equation Ψ_system = Ψ_total = Ψ_s + Ψ_p + Ψ_g + Ψ_m.

• Ψ_m = matric potential

Solute potential (Ψ_s) increases with decreasing solute concentration; an increase in Ψs causes a increase in the total water potential.
