When the narrator asked the boys why they are working this hard they got very you can tell shy because they never wanted that anyone would ask them about their secret that they just were working hard to treat their sister's disease such that she can walk and sing again (she was a very good singer). Here the narrator is talking about Nicola and the lines say that nicola turned deeply under his sunburn and grew pale because he was not in a habit to be asked about their earnings and lifestyle from strangers and he felt embarrasment as he did not expect anyone to notice and comment on their lifestyle. He grew pale because he felt embarresment and did not wanted to share his problems with anyone
