points for debate on the topic that single sex schools are better than co-educational schools

Dear student

The following question tests your creativity and should be attempted on your own. However, here are a few useful hints.

For -
- Single sex schools are better, especially at higher standards as it is less distracting.
- It is easier for a teacher since he/she would have to focus on just one gender.
- Students will feel less awkward around one-another in a single sex school.
- A feeling of mutual brotherhood or sisterhood can be inculcated.
- Teaching certain subjects, such as sex education becomes a lot easier, as the boys and girls don't make fun of each other.

Against -
- Co-education is systematically a lot better than single sex schools.
- Single sex schools do not introduce students to diversity and hence they will find it harder to integrate into a diverse culture.
-  Students are rarely exposed to both male and female role models.
-  Students never learn to understand the opposite gender and they will not be able to socialize with people outside their school.
-  Only Co-ed schools will promote a healthy and positive attitude towards other human beings, to transform them into responsible citizens.

Pros and Cons of Single-Sex Education   PRO CON Mixed genders can be a distraction. Studies are inconclusive about how helpful separating genders is. Single-sex schools break down stereotypes. Eventually, it could be hard for students to assimilate into "mixed gender" society. Teachers can employ instruction techniques geared toward specific genders. Many teachers may not have the training to employ gender-specific teaching techniques. Girls mature faster, so potentially boys won't hold them back. Boys mature slower, so potentially girls won't positively influence them.

Single sex schools have many advantages. First of all, nobody distracts your attention from lessons. Also there is no need to separate girls and boys on physical education and it is easier to chair sexual education, because some students might be ill at ease with that in front of another. Pupils from single sex schools do not quarrel each other about boyfriends or girlfriends and there is such a friendly atmosphere.

However, single sex schools have some disadvantages. For one thing, students from these schools might have problems with contacts to another sex. What is more, schools without boys or girls are boring, because both of them bring something into group. For example, there is more fun when you go on school trips with group, which is mixed.   Despite the advantages, I prefer mixed schools to single sex schools, because personal contacts are based on mutual relationship between people.

Hope this helps!
