In the village, Khuswant Singh spent a lot of time with his grandmother.The grandmother prepared him for school by arranging his slate, chalk and ink pot into a bundle. She also sang the morning prayer while she bathed and dressed him. She would then prepare breakfast and accompany him to school. While the school went on, she would sit inside the temple, reading scriptures. After the school was over, they would both come back home together. On their way, they would feed the street dogs. This shows that the author and his grandmother were close friends.
