Q.20. "I was yawning at your jokes before you were born." What does this mean?
What sent Doris into tears on hearing this?

Dear Student,

Doris was very condescending to her mother when she said that she never got any of their jokes. That statement was meant to convey the impression that the children thought their mother's intelligence was below them and showed the lack of respect they had for their mother.

Mrs. Fitzgerald, in the body of Mrs. Pearson, wanted Doris to understand that such behaviour was unacceptable. She, hence, wanted to snub Doris by trying to put a hole in her swollen ego, to convey her message. She said that she was yawning at Doris's jokes even before she was born, which meant that she found her jokes extremely boring and not worth laughing at, which was why she never seemed to enjoy their jokes.

Doris wasn't used to such treatment from her mother. Her mother has always worked like a slave for her, never saying anything to hurt her and always spoiling her with her attention. Being a spoilt brat, this dramatic shift in her mother hurt Doris a lot and made her cry.
