Q1 ,Q5

Dear student,

Answer 5: The annex residents lived a life of compromises by not only adjusting to each other but also the restrictions that had to be imposed in order to live in hiding from the Nazis. They had to forego their small comforts, give up the freedom of being outdoors, not even look outside through the window during daytime, live with each other in cramped quarters and hold their tongue even if they didn't like something. The incident of the break-in caused fear and panic in the hearts of the inhabitants at the annex. They were afraid when they realised that somebody was at the bookcase. After this incident, the people at the annex realised the importance of being more careful. They were cautious not to make any sound and each one was asked to be careful so that their presence was not obvious to the world outside.

The fear of being seen made the people in hiding do the three following things:
  • They had to wash themselves in a washtub which was in the office because hot water came there, the seven of them would take turns for a bath.
  • Since none of them were alike and all were plagued by varying degrees of modesty, they chose their own place to wash. Peter used to take a bath in the office kitchen even though it had a glass door. When it was time for his bath, he used to inform everyone in turn and ask them not to walk past the kitchen for the next half hour. Mr van Daan took his bath upstairs, figuring that the safety of his own room outwighed the difficulty of having to carry the hot water up all those stairs. Mrs van Daan had not yet taken a bath, she was waiting to see which was the best place. Anne's father bathed in his private office, her mother in the kitchen behind a fire screen while Margot and Anne in the front office.
  • They had to scrub themselves in the dark on Saturday afternoons when curtains were drawn. While the one who wasn't bathing would be on the lookout and gaze in wonder at the endlessly amusing people
