Q9) Describe the demands of Sri-Lankan Tamils. How did they struggle for their demands.

The majoritarian Sinhalese government alienated Sri Lankan Tamils. The Tamils were concentrated in the northern and eastern parts of the country. This led them to ask for regional autonomy, along with the recognition of Tamil as an official language, and equal opportunity in jobs and education. These demands were not fulfilled by the Sri Lankan government and led to a civil war.They started their struggle by launching their own political parties with demands of making Tamil as official language and other major demands.They stated political struggle with the government inorder to recognise their demands.By 1980s several political organisation were formed demanding an independent Tamil Elam (State) in northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka.
