Reaction of the British to the civil disobedience movement:

a. The Civil Disobedience Movement led by M K Gandhi, in the year 1930 was an important milestone in the history of Indian Nationalism. The movement led to  famous salt march  by Gandhi  along with his 78 followers  from Sabarmati ashram to Dandi.
b. This movement aimed at peacefully defying laws without resorting to violence. People from all sections of Indian society participated
c. For the first time women in large numbers left the comfort of their homes and joined the movement.
 The people could successfully defy British laws. There were large-scale boycotts of schools, colleges and offices.People stopped paying taxes
d. 
The colonial government  in retaliation tried to suppress the movement.
e. People faced the batons and bullets of the police .
f.  Many Congress leaders were arrested. Abdul Gaffar khan was arrested, which led to massive protest and procession. The British retaliated in a brutal manner, killing thousands Mahatma Gandhi was also arrested.
g. Later , Gandhi called off the movement due to 
Sholapur incident, and entered into ​Gandhi Irwin Pact which  was signed on March 5, 1931.

The Civil Disobedience movement boycotted foreign cloth and picketed liquor shops. Peasants refused to pay revenue and taxes, village officials resigned.In many places forest people violated forest laws by going into reserved forests to collect wood and graze cattle. Worried by the developments the colonial government began arresting the Congress leaders one by one. This led to violent clashes in many places.Abdul Gaffar Khan, a devout disciple of Gandhiji was arrested in April 1930. Many were killed who protested it. Mahatma Gandhi was arrested industrial workers of Sholapur attacked police posts, municipal buildings, law courts, railway stations. British government was worried and frightened by these developments of the Movement and it followed a policy of brutal repression.Peaceful Satyagrahis were attacked, women and children were beaten, and about 100,000 people were arrested .
